On a beautiful, sunny, summer-like day students from the Senior High School worked under the direction of Sam Jackson, Director of River Education for the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council (BVTC), to remove the invasive water chestnut species along the Blackstone River and in the Valley Falls marsh area. Lana Allababidi, Andrew Blanchard, Ellise Fuller, Sam Gordon (and friend Kaleb), Katherine Larned, Sadie Ray, Jason Siniscalchi (and Ms. St. George), and Rose Wildes kayaked from the Broad Street Bridge in Central Falls up the Blackstone River to the impacted area. Undeterred by the laborious task, the students removed close to 600 lbs of the water plant, which was either landfilled or incinerated. The BVTC Support Crew was impressed by the student's efforts and grateful for the time spent helping to preserve and restore the river and marsh ecosystem.

As we begin Senior Week at EWG, it is my honor and pleasure to Officially introduce to the entire community the Class of 2024 Co-Valadictorians Emma Mears and Katelyn DiPietro. Both have a strong work ethic, a history of taking some of the most rigorous courses, belong to just about every honor society, volunteer for anything and everything asked of them, and have such a positive outlook and academic drive. Congratulations to both distinguished young women.

EWG's Sadie Ray won Best of Show this year in the 2024 Rhode Island Junior Duck Stamp competition! Her artwork has been sent off to national judging this week to compete with the Best of Show winners from every other state. We should hear more in a few days! Although Sadie is currently enrolled in Drawing 2, she completed this incredible colored pencil drawing mainly on her own time, and she showed such dedication! CONGRATULATIONS SADIE!

EWG's TSA team participated in a state-wide competition held on Saturday at N.K. High School. We had a very strong showing in several competitions. Schools from all over the state competed in a wide variety of technology-based skills. Kate Nelkin took second place in the Coding Competition, third place in the Photographic Technology Competition, and third place in the Tech Bowl competition. Nate Arnold had a very strong showing in the Dragster competition, taking home 4th place. He also placed 3rd in the Tech Bowl. They worked very hard over the course of the year and deserved to be recognized. Congratulations!

The EWGHS Wind Turbine Team had an incredible day at the 4th Annual RI Wind Turbine Competition at CCRI, competing against other fantastic schools from around RI. They participated in Engineering Interviews, Wind Tunnel Turbine Testing, Wind Energy Knowledge Quizzes, and a Block Island Wind Farm Kahoot. Some of the students even spent time discussing renewable energy and offshore wind with Congressman Seth Magaziner. I couldn't be more proud of them! 'Wind Soup' (Brielle Bamberry, Devon Cranston, Andan Fry, Akira Hall, and Jesse Ruscito) came in first place in the Advanced Division. 'Hobbits of the Wind' (Emma Markhart, Mason Rosa, and Noah Thurn) came in first place in the KidWind Division. They, along with last year's winning teams 'Wacky Wavy Inflatable Windmen' (Liam Raymond, Logan O'Connor, and Armaan Suri; first place in KidWind Division) and 'Seagull Engineers' (Eben Bamberry, Nadia Frost, and Matt Zeilinski; second place in KidWind Division), have ALL been invited to the KidWind World Competition in Minnesota! If anyone would like to support the team, we are still selling 3D-printed Wind Turbine Kits ($15) and EWG Tee Shirts ($25)...and as always, donations are also accepted! Contact Amy Biagioni-Chmura at Amy_Biagioni@ewg.k12.ri.us for more information.

Four students attended the Rhode Island Model Legislature at the state capital this past Saturday. They represented our school district wonderfully. The four were Brielle Bamberry, Julia Kiernan, Graeme Griffiths, and Owen Spira. All four submitted original legislation, and Graeme had one bill incorporated into Model Leg Law. After interviewing and winning those positions, Graeme and Owen were also involved in state leadership. Since early November, they have worked closely with students from across the state to forge ties, perfect the legislative process, and build mutual respect in biweekly meetings. Owen was also recognized for his contributions and commitment to the program this year, in addition to his outstanding performance on Saturday and during the caucus session this past Wednesday. He was awarded one of two scholarships out of over 70 RI students to attend the Youth Conference on National Affairs this summer outside of Asheville, NC. 18-24-year-olds are the lowest voter turnout age group in the nation, but those who engage in civics in High School have incredibly high political participation. These kids are our future leaders.
